"Bulgarian archaeologists find skeleton of child buried with anti-vampire ritual"
The Sofia Globe, 30 October 2014

The Case:

During archaeological research, in an old fortress near the Bulgarian village of Voden, 3 skeletons were found that had been subjected to "anti-vampire measures". One body had had its feet removed. Another one had its legs tied together after death. And the third one was the skeleton of a child that also had its legs bound together. According to Mr. Doukov of the Museum of Assenovgrad these measures were meant to prevent the return of the dead.

The Date:

The skeleton of the girl is said to date back to the 13th Century. And for the moment I will simply take it that all of the skeletons are from that period. If there will be new information that proves me wrong, I will have to split up the case accordingly.

The Place:

There are several places called Voden, but in view of the facts that the Rhodopes is mentioned as well as a fortress, I think we can safely say that it must be the village of Voden that is in the South-East, close to the Turkish border. Not far from the village are the remains of the Malkote Kale fortress.

Possible Follow-Up:

First and foremost, find and read the online article by The Sofia Globe. It has been reprinted in various other newspapers, but none of them seemed to bring any more information. As it is a very recent article, further press buletins may be send out. And, hopefully and eventually, more serious reports may be published.
