The Sources:

John Cuthbert Lawson:
"Modern Greek Folklore and ancient Greek religion - a study in survivals"
Cambridge University Press, 1910

The Cases:

This is what Lawson tells us:

"In 1899, when I was in Santorini, I was told that two or three years previously the inhabitants of Therasia had burnt a vrykolakas and when I visited that island the incident was not denied but the responsibility for it was laid upon the people of Santorini."

The Date:

No exact date. But based on the information we have been given I am inclined to file this case as "around 1896".

The Place:

Santorini is one of the Cyclades. The island is in fact an old volcano that was partly destroyed by a giant eruption around 1450 BC. Much of the original island/volcano was destroyed during the eruption. There are those who try to connect the island to the disappearance of the legendary Atlantis.

Therasia used to be part of the island until it exploded. It is now an island just West of Santorini.

Possible Follow-Up:

Get a copy of Lawson's book for starters. See what other cases you can find. And maybe book a holiday to do some on-spot research.
