The Sources:

John Cuthbert Lawson:
"Modern Greek Folklore and ancient Greek religion - a study in survivals"
Cambridge University Press, 1910

The Cases:

This is what Lawson tells us (Quoting from Francois Richard):

"The Abbé considered this possession by the devil to be a proof of the truth of the Greek persuasion, alleging that no Mohammedan or Roman Catholic ever became a vrykolakas. This however is not strictly accurate, for in Santorini a Roman priest, who had apostatized and turned Mohammedan and who for his many crimes was finally hanged, appeared after death and was only disposed of by burning. "

The Date:

Maybe it is best that we simply file the case as "before 1657".

The Place:

Santorini is one of the Cyclades. The island is in fact an old volcano that was partly destroyed by a giant eruption around 1450 BC. Much of the original island/volcano was destroyed during the eruption. There are those who try to connect the island to the disappearance of the legendary Atlantis.

Possible Follow-Up:

Lawson tells us that he is quoting this story from a book by Francois Richard, a Jesuit Priest who lived on Santorini sometime in the 17th Century. The name of his book is: "Relation de ce qui s'est passé de plus remarquable a Sant-Erini, isle de l'Archipel, depuis l'etablissement des Peres de la Compagnie de Jesus en icelle" (Paris, 1657)
