The Sources:

Henry Fanshawe Tozer:
"Researches in the Highlands of Turkey"
John Murray, London, 1869

The Cases:

This is what Henry Fanshawe Tozer tells us:

"Mr. Newton mentions the following mode of exorcism, which was employed in Rhodes on a woman who had returned to earth as a vrykolaka. 'The priest of the village laid on the ground one of the dead woman's shifts, over the neck of which he walked, held up by two men, for fear the vampire should seize him. While in this position he read verses from the New Testament, till the shift swelled up and split. When this rent takes place the evil spirit is supposed to escape through the opening."

The Date:

For the moment, let us simply file the case as "before 1869".

The Place:

Rhodes or Rhodos is an island SouthEast of Athens and close to the Turkish coast.

Possible Follow-Up:

Go check out Tozer's report and see what else he has to say. And then you can try to find out who Mr. Newton is and where and when he has written about this case.
