The Case

Here we go again:

We have experienced in times of the plague, that dead people, especially female ones, that have died of the plague, make chewing noises in their graves, like a pig that is eating: and that with such noises the plague gets worse and, usually within the same family, people die one after the other."

Anno 1553, when the plague was here in Lauban, such a thing has happened that a woman has also made such noises in her grave. When people were dying of the plague in Sangerhausen in 1565, Heinrich Rord reports the same thing happened. Adamus Rötherus, "Superintendens" in Merseburg, remembers similar examples that took place when AD 1581 the plague was there as well as in the area around the town.

The Date:

We have been given the year of 1581.

The Place:

Merseburg can be found West of Leipzig.

Possible Follow-Up:

Of course you should get yourself a copy of Martinus Bohemus' "Die drey grossen Landtplagen - Krieg, Tewrung, Pestilentz". There is some interesting material in there. And obviously we have to try and learn more about the original source: Adamus Rötherus.
